    Comments on the Flowchart from top to bottom -
    Under Triggers: we are assuming that “Appearance” means aesthetics.
    Other possible triggers: Publication, Infestation
    The triggers listed only trigger a treatment if there is damage or some other need for conservation. Triggers listed will almost always trigger a condition assessment.
    Under Preliminary Assessment: “Previous Conservation Treatments” and “Space” and “Equipment/Facilities” should be included. Also, Priority encompases both object value and object condition. ie an object of high value to the Museum may be placed in higher priority to an object that has a greater need for conservation.
    After “Resources Available” - there should be a box “Movement”.
    Another potential document in the region of Detailed Examination” would be “Discussions about Treatment”.
    “Condition Report” is ALWAYS produced in one form or another. Sometimes the condition report comes after the detailed exam, other times as part of the final treatment report.
    If Approval is not granted “Movement” would occur.
    If Approval is granted “Movement?” should be “Is object in treatment location?” If yes - no action, if no - Movement.
    Photography often will occur before treatment, as part of the preliminary assessment, detailed examination or treatment proposal.
    “Treatment Complete?” should proceed “Treatment Documentation”. Also, Treatment is its own loop involving a constant stream of reassessment and readjustment, which may or may not involve other parties.
    During treatment some conservators produce a journal during treatment in addition to a treatment report at the end of the treatment process. Journals may be digital, analog or they may even be discarded at the end of treatment.
    What are “Database entries”?
    Bibliography should be added to Checklists, images etc.
    “Travel” and “Handling” should be added to “Display, Storage reccomendations” - this may become a component of Loan Reports at another time.

    In addition to detailed examination, often (preliminary) research needs to be carried out before the decision to treat is made. I guess this is what is meant by the “analyses” box at the far left. Maybe that box should be “research”, since at this stage it is often non-destructive imaging studies that are carried out for eg. x-ray, IR analyses and UV examination. You might also consider replacing “conservation and art history” with “treatment history and art historical context”, maybe in separate boxes. Does “staff” at the upper left also include press and media? I agree with the Met that “movement” can often occur before “detailed examination”. At the “approval stage” a document may also be generated. Press and media can also be added to the box along with education. Presentation of the work, in one form or another, can also take place after treatment. Consultation with external experts (in the form of a commission) can also continue during treatment phase.
