In the formal chart there is no indication that images are annotated, which is quite common with conservation photography and presents enough difficulties with digital images that it needs to be taken into account in a conservation documentation system

I wonder about the terminology photography vs. imaging? Also, I think this could easily be applied to scanning or digitising existing materials. It may be interesting to cross check this photography workflow with the recent AIC guidelines for Digital photography (imaging)

    Hi Chuck,
Would the annotation action be something associated with the ‘Use Image’ box? Or, perhaps an output (along with Documentation box in yellow to the right)?

    Hi Austin,
Interesting observation about photography vs. imaging. Imaging is a more inclusive term. Thanks for the suggestion about AIC guidelines. I actually worked on that document so luckily, I have a copy handy for reference. Great idea!

    Hi Angela,
Yes, annotation is part of using the images, but it could also be important in the “Existing documentation photography” and “Initial Assessment” boxes. It’s also an output in the sense that the annotations are essentially metadata and might provide useful in reporting for condition surveys. (That’s entirely speculative on my part.). In any case, the annotations have to layered over the image so that it’s always possible to see any part of the image without obscuring it, and the digital used used for this should be fairly precise — not simply a box you position over a portion of the image.

What does “standard initial simple” mean vs. “”Photography…”? “Standard initial simple” flow should go to “take picture” as the loop holds for both types of photography. The meaning of “Initial assemssment” is unclear. At the top under “outputs” , a document is produced requesting the images”. Toward the end of the flow chart under outputs, an annotated image could be produced, i.e. pdf, psd, or png. files). What about different protocols for BT and AT as opposed to DT images?
